Can you cook a whole chicken in an air fryer?
Yes, when the chicken fits comfortably with space above and around it for hot air. Six litres alone cannot tell you which bird will fit. Compare its shape with the basket’s internal dimensions first. If it is a tight squeeze, jointed pieces are a more practical way to make the same dinner.
Prepare your roast
- Choose a fully defrosted chicken that fits the basket. Pat the skin dry and rub lightly with oil, salt, pepper and sweet paprika. Do not wash raw chicken.
- For a whole chicken of about 1.2 kg, use 180°C and 60-70 minutes as a starting range. Decide when to finish according to your bird’s size and measured doneness.
- Prepare salad or a side dish separately while it cooks. Avoid packing the basket around the chicken so there is room for air and for checking the meat.
- Measure the thickest flesh of breast and thigh, away from bone, with a clean thermometer. It should reach 75°C for at least 30 seconds. Continue cooking in short stages if needed.
The Fashion air fryer lets you adjust time and temperature during cooking. Its maximum 60-minute timer needs setting again for a longer cook. Let the finished chicken rest for a few minutes while you finish laying the table.
What if the chicken is too tall?
Do not squash it into the basket. Choose a smaller bird or joint it and cook portions that fit comfortably.
Is browned skin enough?
Skin colour does not show the temperature at the centre. A food thermometer is especially useful for a whole bird, where thicker parts may take longer.
