Good soup is rarely made in a single serving. Anyone who cooks once counts the third bowl in as well, because at noon tomorrow that pot saves lunch. This 24 centimetre piece holds 4.1 litres: enough for everyone to eat tonight and for one box to stay in the fridge.

Why this is the kitchen's default pot

The 24 centimetre width and the 11.8 centimetre wall together give the proportion in which soup does not boil over and a stew does not dry out. It is tall enough to keep liquid above the ingredients and wide enough to start the vegetables browning in one layer before you add the stock.

The same pot boils the side dish, cooks the vegetable stew and handles the pasta. If you keep only one pot in the kitchen, in most households this is the size that comes out most often.

The lid strains too

Strainer slots run along the rim of the tempered glass lid, and it carries an integrated spout. Boiled potatoes and pasta do not need tipping out: leave the lid where it is and the water leaves through the spout.

The lid sits on a soft-closing, heat-resistant silicone system, so it does not rattle while the pot boils, and a steam hole keeps the excess from condensing on the worktop.

Why it looks right on the worktop

This pot comes out several times a week, so it cannot stay out of sight. That is why it comes in a matt finish and a minimalist line: matt does not scatter the kitchen light and does not show every fingerprint, and the handles continue the line of the body instead of jutting out of it. Taken off the heat, it holds its own on the worktop while it cools.

The handles and the lid knob are stay-cool, ergonomic and soft-touch, which on a full four-litre pot is less a comfort than a matter of a sure grip.

Care

• When draining, keep the lid seated and hold both handles.
• Let the pot cool before you run cold water into it.
• Stir with wood or silicone to protect the non-stick surface.
• Use a soft sponge for washing up; metal pads and scouring powder leave marks.
• Dry the silicone rim of the lid and store the lid upside down on the pot.
