Set the budget before you browse

1. Write down a limit that fits comfortably with your monthly plans. You do not need to match what others spend.
2. Allow separately for wrapping, a card and any delivery. That leaves a realistic amount for the gift itself.
3. Choose a task they would appreciate help with: getting ready, cooking together, making coffee or settling into a new home.
4. Before deciding, check size, compatibility and whether they already own something similar.

Ask without giving the surprise away

For a kitchen gift, finding out which hob they use or which pan needs replacing may be enough. For a styling tool, ask about their usual hairstyle and getting-ready routine. If you are unsure of their taste, a close friend or their own wish list is a better clue than a generic occasion-based suggestion.

Agree the details of a shared present

Each person’s contribution should feel comfortable. Before ordering, agree who buys, wraps and hands over the gift, and who keeps the proof of purchase. In the card, explain why it made you think of them rather than naming its value.
