One cup or seven: the scale shows what you pour in

With a kettle, most of the energy goes on heating more water than you need. Two or three hundred millilitres is enough for a mug of tea, and yet we fill the jug, because we cannot see where we are. This one has a built-in water level indicator running beside the handle with a clearly visible scale, so a glance is enough to put in what you will actually drink.

The jug takes 1.7 litres, the heating power is 2200 watts, and the supply rating is 220-240 volts at 50-60 hertz. Fast heating means that at this power the water comes to the boil in a short time.

The appliance is 25 cm tall and its base is 15.5 cm across. The height is worth checking if your wall cupboard hangs low over the worktop, because opening the lid also needs room above.

The 360 degree base

You can lift the jug off from any angle and set it back at any angle, because the base goes all the way round. For a left-handed user that is far from a detail: on a base fixed in one direction the handle always ends up on the wrong side. And on a crowded worktop, what counts is that the jug goes back without turning it first.

In the morning the jug supplies the water for coffee and porridge, and while it heats you set out the mugs. In the evening the same appliance heats water for tea with half the fill, because the scale shows you where the level is. When guests come, enough hot water for several cups is ready in one go.

Care

• Unplug the base before cleaning and let the jug cool down.
• Wipe the outside with a damp cloth, then dry it.
• Never immerse the jug or the base in water.
• Descale regularly, at an interval that suits the hardness of your water.
• Leave the lid open for a few minutes after boiling so the steam can escape.
• If it will stand unused for a while, pour out the remaining water and store it dry.
