Bubbles from tap water, without a socket

Sparkling water at home usually falls down on one thing: carrying it home. This soda maker turns that around. You fill the water at the tap and add the bubbles on the worktop. It needs no mains power and no batteries, so it is not one more appliance hunting for a socket.

The appliance is entirely mechanical: no electronics, no display, no software. On a soda maker that is an advantage, because there is less that can fail and nothing ties it to a socket. It works just as well on the kitchen counter, on the garden table and in the office kitchen.

Two bottles, two occasions

The set holds a 0.5 and a 1 litre PET bottle, each with a lid. The half litre is the one you take with you; the one litre is the one you put on the table at dinner. Those are not the same situation, and one size rarely suits both.

The bottles are made of food-safe plastic; rinse them with water up to 40 °C. A dust cover comes in the box too, so the machine does not stand open between uses.

The one litre bottle stays on the table, and its lid holds the fizz between pours. If it runs out there is no trip to the shop: you fill it, work through the button and put it back on the table. The row where the soda bottles used to stand in the pantry is free again.

A pressure gauge you actually read

A pressure gauge sits on top of the machine, and it is what turns carbonating from guesswork into something you can measure. You do not have to judge from the hiss how much went in: the dial shows where you are, and you stop where you want to.

A double safety pressure release is built in. When the pressure reaches the limit the system lets the excess out. With the air-inlet button you release the pressure left in the bottle yourself before taking it out.

Fill the bottle with cold water to the mark, screw it into place, press the button as many times as you want bubbles, then release the pressure and take it out. Flavouring belongs after that, not before.

About the CO2 cylinder

The machine works with standard CO2 cylinders, and you have to buy that cylinder separately: it is not in the set. You swap the cylinder at the pace you use it; the machine stays.

Materials and the space it takes

The machine is made of stainless steel and PP, and the drip tray is stainless steel. It measures 43.5 × 22 × 12 cm. The width is narrow, the height is not: when you measure it under a shelf, leave room above for fitting and removing the bottle.

Double pressure release

Two independent routes by which excess pressure built up in the bottle escapes. Together with the built-in gauge and the safety valve it keeps carbonating within a controlled range.

Two bottles instead of a crate of water

If you drink sparkling water regularly, you carry bottles home every week, store them, then take them out to the recycling. With the soda maker the same water comes from the tap, and two bottles go round instead.

The two bottles go round again and again, and the packaging is recyclable. You also get back the shelf a crate of sparkling water used to take up.

Cleaning and storage

• Rinse the bottles after use with water up to 40 °C.
• The machine is easy to clean.
• Only an undamaged, clean bottle may go into the machine, and check that it is locked in before every use.
• The dust cover stays on the machine between two uses.
