The five minutes before makeup

Getting ready has a stage nobody talks about: lashes still hanging down, those few hairs at the edge of the brow, the fine hair above the lip that only you notice. These two pens were made for those five minutes. They do not do your makeup; they prepare the ground.

Why two separate tools rather than one with swappable heads

The set holds two independent pens: one is a heated eyelash curler, the other an electric shaver. Each runs on its own battery with its own switch, so you do not have to change a head to move from lashes to brows.

That has a practical benefit. The shaver blade and the heated comb are two completely different surfaces; on one body you would have to take the device apart at every switch, exactly when you are in a hurry.

The curler is a comb, not a clamp

A classic lash curler pinches the lashes along one line. This tool has a comb instead: you comb the lashes between the teeth while the heated surface works on them. The comb shape gives an even, tidy curl.

A double heating wire does the warming, and that is what makes the curl quick. What you see of it is that you draw the comb from the lash root outwards, without having to press anything.

The colour that tells you when to start

It has a temperature sensor, and the feedback is not a lamp but the surface itself: the device changes colour when it reaches the ideal temperature. You do not have to count seconds, and you do not have to touch it to find out whether it is warm enough.

Switch it on, wait for the colour to change, and go. That is the whole learning curve.

The shaver: long blade for the shape, short blade for the detail

The other pen has two blades. You work on the shape of the brow with the longer one and on smaller, finer areas with the shorter one. The blades are stainless steel, and the safety blade does not hurt or scratch the skin; use it on unbroken skin only.

You can use it on the face and the body alike, so it is not only about brows: the area above the lip and any other small patch just as much. The emphasis is on tidying up, not on removing hair from large areas.

Pen-sized, made for a toiletry bag

The curler is 140.5 millimetres long and the shaver 134.8. That is the thickness and length of a pen: both fit in the pencil compartment of a wash bag, and they sit side by side in a handbag too.

The two belong in the makeup bag, next to the eyeshadow and the blusher. That is where they were meant to live: among the everyday tools of getting ready, not beside the large devices on a bathroom shelf.

Batteries, so they are ready again anywhere

Each tool runs on a single AAA battery, and batteries are not included. When travelling that is an advantage rather than a drawback: you do not have to carry two cables and an adapter, and batteries can be bought anywhere.

A cleaning brush and a brow comb come with the set. The brush sweeps cut hairs out of the shaver head; the brow comb tidies the hairs before shaping so you can see where the line runs.

Materials, safety and hygiene

The housing is light, and each head is built for its own job. Heat only ever builds on the surface of the heating head, so the pen stays comfortable in your hand.

Batteries must be handed in at a designated collection point at the end of their life, and the product may not be placed in household waste. It is intended for household use in a dry, indoor environment.

A morning, as the two pens go through it

You switch the curler on and, while it warms up, comb through your brows with the brow comb. When the comb's colour signals, you comb the lashes from the root outwards, a few strokes at a time.

Then comes the shaver. The longer blade clears the lower line of the brow, the shorter one the stray hairs at the edge. Two minutes, and from there makeup is just makeup, not correction.

Cleaning and storage

• Switch the pen off before cleaning it or changing its battery.
• Sweep cut hairs out of the shaver head with the cleaning brush supplied.
• Let the heated comb cool before you touch it or put it away.
• Do not hold either tool with wet hands or use them near water.
• Put the cap back on both pens and keep them out of children's reach.
• Take the batteries out before a longer break.
