What cookware do one or two people need?

Start with a dinner you often make: where do the meat or vegetables brown, where does the side dish cook, and will you save some for tomorrow? Choose sizes for those jobs. A small saucepan, a frying pan and a deeper pot for larger batches can provide a useful starting point without collecting every size.

Build your own essentials

  1. For breakfast eggs and a single-portion dinner, look at the cooking surface. A 24 cm frying pan can be a starting point, provided the ingredients have space beside one another.
  2. A 16 cm saucepan can handle sauce, a small side dish or warming milk. Use its lid when the recipe calls for covered cooking.
  3. Keep a larger pot if you cook for two days. A deeper 20 cm pot does a different job from a frying pan of the same width.

A set makes sense when you will use its sizes. If you already have a favourite frying pan, the missing saucepan may be all you need. A 400 ml blender can take care of a breakfast drink without shaping the rest of your dinner equipment.

Should I always cook exactly two portions?

If you like putting aside tomorrow’s lunch, plan a larger batch from the start. Choose cookware for that amount, rather than only for the people at tonight’s table.

Why does my frying pan get crowded?

The cooking surface may be too small for the ingredients. Brown them in two batches, or use a larger surface that also fits your hob.
