Three pans, and a lid for every one of them

In most kitchens the problem is rarely that there is no frying pan. It is that no lid fits the two you own, and the third one is hiding at the back of the cupboard. This eight-piece line-up settles that: a 20 cm, 1 litre and a 24 cm, 1.7 litre plain frypan, a 28 cm, 2.1 litre grill pan beside them, and a glass lid of its own for each. The seventh and eighth pieces are two silicone trivets, so you can set a hot pan down on the table too.

What the lid is actually for

A lid starts to matter the moment a recipe asks you to turn the heat down and cover the pan. You start an onion base uncovered, then let the vegetables steam under the lid. You colour a chicken thigh first, then cover it and let it finish. Without a lid, this is the point where the hunt for a plate or a chopping board that fits begins.

Here each of the three pans has its own lid, in tempered glass with a heat-resistant silicone system that closes it slowly and quietly. Through the glass you can see what is happening inside, so you do not have to lift it to check whether the liquid has cooked away.

A flat surface and a ridged one are two different jobs

The 20 and 24 cm pans have a flat base: eggs, pancake batter, sauce, anything that wants an even surface. The 28 cm grill pan is ridged and square, so a larger cut of meat or several slices of vegetable sit side by side. The ridges lift the meat out of its own juices and leave their mark on the surface.

The difference between the two sizes is deliberate too. The 20 cm one is the size for one or two portions of breakfast and for smaller sauces. The 24 cm is the one you reach for on a weeknight, because a portion of meat and its side fit together.

Forged aluminium, matt finish

The pans are made from forged aluminium and their outside is matt. The Fashion by Berlinger Haus design language is minimalist: no ornament, just a metallic insert at the end of the handle.

The handles are soft touch and ergonomic, and they stay cool while you cook. Keep a cloth to hand all the same, because the lid knob and the rim of the pan still take on heat.

All three pans have a turbo induction base and work on all five hob types: induction, gas, electric, vitroceramic and halogen. If you move house or change the cooker, the set moves with you.

Materials and safety

An ordinary day with the set

In the morning the eggs go in the 20 cm pan, and stay warm under the lid while you drink your coffee. In the evening you colour onions in the 24 cm, cover it, and while the side cooks the grill pan takes the meat. At washing-up time the three pans and three lids nest back into the cupboard together.

When guests come, the two flat pans work in parallel on the hob while the grill pan carries the meat. Three pans, three lids: cooking comes down to as many steps as the recipe actually has.

Care

• Wash and dry all three pans and all three lids before first use.
• Let a pan cool to lukewarm before it meets water: a sudden change of temperature is hard on any coating.
• Clean with a soft sponge and washing-up liquid; the coating is easy to clean and asks for no scouring agent.
• Turn the food with wooden or silicone utensils so the cooking surface stays free of scratches.
• Because of their silicone rims, keep the lids off a hot hob; the trivets in the set are there for exactly this.
• Store the lids upside down on the pans, so the coating and the glass stay apart.

Who this set is for
