The coffee that survives the second meeting

You pour it at eight, then a call comes, then a review, then an email. By the time you get back to it, it is lukewarm. This mug is what prevents that: it keeps a hot drink at temperature for up to 8 hours and a cold one for up to 12.

Why copper between the walls

The inner body is 18/10 stainless steel, and a copper layer runs between the two steel walls. The copper holds back the radiated heat, which is why your coffee is still hot when you get back to it hours later.

The everyday consequence is that the double wall keeps the outside cooler, and with a cold drink no condensation forms on it. Either way your hand stays dry and it leaves no ring on the papers.

One thing is worth adding: the real time depends on how hot the drink goes in and how often you open the lid on the way.

Two lids, two ways to drink

The mug comes with a spout lid and a straw lid, and it is those two you swap, not the mug. For hot coffee the spout lid is the logical one: flip it open, drink, close it. For an iced drink the straw lid, because you do not have to tilt the mug while you move.

The cap closes in both arrangements, so it travels safely in a bag. That is where a thermal mug is decided: not in how long it keeps the heat, but in whether it tips over next to the laptop.

The base that keeps it in place

The base is silicone and non-slip. In a car cup holder and on the edge of a desk, those few millimetres of silicone decide whether the mug stays where it was when you take a corner or push a folder aside. Set down it does not knock, and it does not start moving on a sloping desk.

Size and carrying

The mug holds 0.5 litres, stands 19 cm tall and measures 8.5 cm across. Half a litre covers a longer journey or a morning, and this is the size that still fits most cup holders.

A detachable carrying strap comes with it, so it does not have to be in your hand: hook it on a finger or clip it to a bag. The outer paint is resistant and the surface smooth, so at the end of the day a wipe is enough.

Materials and safety

18/10 stainless steel

The steel grade containing 18% chromium and 10% nickel. It is the usual composition for vessels in contact with food and drink, because it resists corrosion and does not take on the taste of what is in it.

A day, as the mug goes through it

Tea in the kitchen in the morning, lid in place, then the side pocket of a bag. At ten the desk, where the non-slip base keeps it where you put it. After lunch a rinse, iced water, the straw lid, and the same mug carries the afternoon.

That switch is why it holds half a litre and not less. For one coffee it would be generous. Half a litre is there so you need not refill halfway, and the two lids are there so you can change register on the way.

One habit is worth picking up: with a hot drink, fit the lid before you set off. In practice that is what separates a mug you can carry from one that only stands on a desk.

Cleaning and storage

• Rinse it after use and wash the lid separately; deposits collect mostly under the seal.
• Clean the smooth inner steel surface with a soft brush or sponge.
• Dry it before closing it so no moisture is trapped inside.
• Both the inner surface and the outer coating are easy to clean.
