The same wave on the tenth section

The end of a curling session is where the wave usually gives: by the time you reach the back of your head it holds more loosely than it does beside your face. This handle carries five preset settings, 120, 140, 160, 180 and 200 degrees, and heat recovery is fast. Not a scale but settings: once you know your number, the tenth section goes to the same place as the first.

Which setting is yours?

The five settings follow the hair type. There is a setting for every hair type, from fine to coarse, so you are not working with the two ends of a scale: you find the number that belongs to your hair and come back to it next time.

A 25 millimetre ceramic-coated barrel

The barrel is 2.5 cm across and the whole appliance is 32.5 cm long. That diameter is tight enough for springy, bouncing curls and open enough for a soft, long wave: what makes the difference is how long you leave the section on and how thickly you wrap it. The barrel surface carries a ceramic coating.

Fast heat recovery

With curling, the bottleneck is not the heat-up but whether there is any heat left in the barrel by the tenth section. Heat recovery is fast: back to 120 degrees within 60 seconds. Fast recovery helps keep the temperature close to even while you work.

A cool tip and a stand

There is a cool tip at the end of the barrel, so you can hold it with your other hand while you wrap a section. The stand matters because the hot barrel has to rest somewhere while you take the next section: the stand lifts it clear instead of leaving it flat on your dressing table.

The insulated end of the barrel that can be held even in use. It is the point where your other hand guides the appliance while you wrap the section around it.

The cord turns after your wrist

Curling is a rotating movement: your wrist turns on every section. The 1.8 metre cord swivels a full turn at the handle, so the cable does not wind up and does not pull your hand back halfway.

You can take it with you

The appliance runs on 100 to 240 volts at 50-60 Hz and draws 50-55 watts. The wide voltage range means it is not limited to European mains; a travel adapter may still be needed for the plug shape, but the appliance itself does not have to stay at home.

Safety

One evening, a few sections

You do not have to do the whole head. Four sections beside your face and a turn or two down the length already give the look a different direction. Switch it on, wait for the LED, and set the level your hair can take. Split the dry hair into sections of two or three centimetres, wrap them on the barrel, and do not comb through as soon as you let go.

For a full head of waves it is worth starting at the back and working forward in stages. The size of the wave also depends on how thick a section you wrap: a thinner section gives a tighter curl, a thicker one a softer wave.

Keeping the barrel clean

• Switch off, unplug and let it cool completely on its stand after use.
• Wipe the cooled barrel with a soft, barely damp cloth; styling product residue builds up on it.
• The appliance must not come into contact with water and must not be used with wet hands.
• Use it on dry or almost dry hair, and try a lower setting the first time.
• Do not wind the cord tightly around the appliance; it breaks first where it enters the handle.
• Store it cool and dry, out of the reach of children.
