One mug of tea does not need a whole jug of water

A kettle works on the logic of heating a lot at once; the rest cools down and by evening you boil the same water again. This appliance thinks differently: it releases the amount you ask for, at the temperature your drink calls for. It has four serving sizes and four factory temperatures, and the cup decides the rest.

Four temperatures, because not every drink takes boiling water

The factory settings are 45, 65, 85 and 100 °C. Each one has its drink: 45 degrees for lemon or honey water, 65 for matcha and warm tea, 85 for green tea or instant coffee. Boiling belongs to black tea and to cooking. The touch panel itself can be set between 18 and 100 °C, so the four buttons are only the shortcut.

Four serving sizes, less water poured away

The available amounts are 150, 220, 300 and 500 ml. The 150 suits an espresso cup, the 220 an ordinary mug, the 300 a large one, and the 500 fills a flask or starts a pan. Press the temperature, press the amount, and the appliance releases exactly that. What stays in the tank stays cold, so you are never reboiling the same water.

The filter that comes in the box

One AQUA OPTIMA universal filter comes with the appliance, from the 30 day universal cartridge family. It goes into the tank only after preparation: rinse the cartridge before use as the enclosed instructions direct. Replace it after 30 days or after 170 litres of filtered water, whichever comes first.

The narrow body and the touch panel

The appliance is an upright, narrow body with a ribbed front and a transparent tank beside it, where the water level shows from outside. The controls sit in a small metal-framed touch panel; touch it and the temperatures and serving sizes light up, otherwise it stays dark. It uses 18/10 stainless steel parts.

The appliance is 23.5 × 15.2 × 29.5 cm with a 52 cm cord; for a tight run of worktop, allow 30 cm of height.

A child lock, because this is hot water

The lock has to be released before dispensing. That step is what makes a hot water dispenser possible at all in a kitchen where children come and go: touching a button by accident starts nothing on its own.

The tray height adjusts, so a short cup and a tall flask can both be lined up under the spout.

Where it earns its place

It is at home in four places: a kitchen worktop, a living room, an office and a motorhome. What they share is that there is no room for a large kettle and a separate jug of cold water. Thanks to the narrow body and the removable tank, refilling means carrying the tank to the tap rather than the appliance.

The refill indicator shows when the supply runs low, and the water level is visible along the side of the tank, so there is no lid to open to check.

Cleaning and upkeep

• Lift out the tank, pour away what is left and rinse it; water should not stand in it for days.
• Take out the drip tray, empty it and wipe it dry.
• Wipe the outside of the appliance with a soft damp cloth.
• Change the filter after 30 days or 170 litres, whichever comes first; note the date you fitted it.
• Always prepare a new cartridge as the enclosed instructions direct before putting it in the tank.
