**How can you smooth curtains without taking them down?** Clean but creased curtains can be steamed while hanging if the fabric allows it. Work downwards in narrow sections, then leave the fabric hanging freely to dry. Start with a small test near the hem. Steaming helps settle folds; dusty or stained curtains need washing or another suitable cleaning method first.

## Work through one window in four steps

1. Check the care label for steam restrictions. Move nearby furniture far enough away to give yourself comfortable access to the curtain.
2. Test a hidden part of the hem at the distance specified for your steamer. Let it dry so you can check for a change in colour or texture.
3. Work from top to bottom in small sections. Adjust the fabric outside the steam path and keep your hand out from behind it. Treat only areas you can reach safely.
4. Leave finished sections hanging loosely. Wait until they are completely dry before drawing back or tying the curtains, so you do not press new folds into them.

## When a larger water tank helps

Both garment steamers work vertically on curtains. The handheld model holds 220 ml of water, while the folding model holds 100 ml. If storage space is tight, take a look at the folding version.

- Revisit stubborn folds once the fabric has dried. Make several short passes instead of soaking one spot.
- Deal with the cause of stains or strong odours through cleaning. Use steam to finish the folds in a clean curtain.
