**How do you set up your first shared kitchen?** Lay your existing pans, mugs and cutlery side by side before buying anything new. Keep the favourites, identify missing pieces, then divide up the worktop and cupboard space. Thinking through breakfast and two or three regular dinners reveals what you will actually use. Matching colours is easier once those everyday needs are clear.

## Start by cooking together

1. Choose a dinner and set out its cookware. You will soon see whether two frying pans still leave you needing a saucepan for the side dish, or whether all the sizes are already there.
2. Count your place settings. A 24-piece cutlery set equips six people, leaving knives, forks, spoons and teaspoons for guests as well as the two of you.
3. Rehearse a morning. Where does the kettle fit, who reaches for bread, and can both of you get to the mugs? Place the bread bin and storage around those movements.

### Do we need a matching cookware set immediately?

Only if you need the sizes it contains. Keep the pieces that already work well; one or two additions can complete a shared kitchen.

### What about duplicate utensils?

Try both and keep the one you prefer within easy reach. A rarely used spare need not take up your everyday workspace.
